Who makes this, and how it is paid for

The product

World Radio is a live radio player. On Chrome it has been on the Web Store since 2024 and is used by around a thousand people a week, and version 2.0 is a complete rebuild: a new interface built as a hi-fi deck, a spectrum visualizer driven by the real audio, the whole directory on infinite scroll, curated shelves, a sleep timer and a wake to radio alarm.

The same product is built for iPhone and iPad, natively, from the same directory and the same design system.

Where the stations come from

The directory is radio-browser.info, an open community database of radio stations that anybody can correct. We did not build it and we do not own it. What we built is the player, the way the directory is organised inside it, and the deck.

The 30,775 unique playable streams counted for the 176 country pages on this site come from a snapshot of that directory, taken when the site is built.

How it is paid for

The free version carries a small bar promoting our own apps, and on Chrome there is an optional one time US$9.99 unlock called World Radio Pro that removes it and adds four conveniences. That is the whole business model. There is no advertising network in the product, no data is collected or sold, and there is nothing to subscribe to.

We decided early that the catalogue itself would never be the thing we charge for. A public directory is not ours to put behind a paywall, and a radio app that hides most of the radio is a defective radio app. We sell the things we made.
