Antenne NRW

Position 758 of 1,409 puts this station in the middle of Germany's directory presence. The middle is worth browsing precisely because the ordering has stopped sorting by fame and has not yet stopped sorting at all.

Antenne NRW streams at 48 kbps against Germany's median of 128, which is less than half the local norm. On a dial where 62% of stations reach 128 kbps, a rate this low stands out, and it usually means either a speech station that never needed more or an encoder that has not been touched in years.

The format here is AAC+, against a listing for Germany overwhelmingly made of MP3. Both play in a browser; the difference shows up in how much quality survives at a given bitrate, where AAC has the advantage at lower rates.

The audio comes from stream.antenne.de, and 11 other stations in Germany are served from the same address. That is a streaming platform carrying many broadcasters rather than a station running its own server, which is worth knowing for a practical reason: when a platform has a bad night, a whole block of Germany's listing stops answering at once and nothing is wrong with any of the stations in it.
